The squaring of the circle
One of the three
classical problems of ancient mathematics, formulated as early as the 5th
century BC, which resisted all attempts to solve it for centuries. The task was
to construct a square of the same area for a given circle using only a ruler
and compasses. It was not until 1882 that the German mathematics professor
Lindemann proved that Ludolf’s number π (3.141592653589)
is transcendental – loosely speaking, it cannot be expressed in a finite way,
and the problem of squaring the circle therefore has definitely no solution.
Even today we can hear the comparison of an unsolvable problem to „squaring the
circle“.
By jointing the letters J and T,
the first letters of the words forming the company name JUSTTHINK s.r.o. (the
coincidence with the initials of the company executive is completely
accidental), we get the stylized Greek letter „Pi“. Ludolf’s infinitely long
number π (355/113 or in today’s
translation ALT+960) is equal to the area of a circle with a unit radius, or the
area of a circle is exactly PI times larger than the area of a square with a
side r.
And hence our pictogram with a circular arc and a Greek letter in
its center.
The wheel, undoubtedly one of the first revolutionary inventions
of mankind dating back thousands of years BC, has found its widespread use
thanks to the needs and creativity of our ancestors. Despite numerous
improvements, it can be said with exaggeration even in our times „still it
spins“.
